Research Themes
The LCC CRSP values and supports research that looks at the interaction of equity, health, and innovation on the resilience of livestock holding systems in regions vulnerable to the impact of climate change. We fund research that looks at problems from a multidisciplinary perspective and comes up with solutions that address problems at the system and field levels.
Climate Extremes and Longterm Change
Climate Scientist, Dr. Robert Gillies (USU) leads CALVN, examining monsoon patterns in Nepal and how shifts in precipitation may affect livestock production. A Primary goal for CALVN is to complete country-wide climate analyses, with a focus on Nepal’s Far-Western Region.

Animal Health: Disease Distribution & Resiliency
Dr. Jonna Mazet (UC Davis) leads HALI, Health for Animals and Livelihood Improvement in Tanzania. HALI assesses the effects of zoonotic disease (diseases passed between animals and people) and water management on health and livelihoods in Tanzania.

Ecosystem Health: Resiliency of Socio-Ecological Systems
Dr. Nial Hanan (SDSU) leads TRANS in collaboration with U.S. Geological Survey and Mali partners.TRANS predicts the effect of climate change and land-use patterns on key resources such as water, fodder, and movement corridors by using a pastoral ecosystem model.

Pro-Poor Value Chains: Market Access and Reliability
Dr. Peter Little leads CHAINS in collaboration with Kenyan and Ethiopian partners to determine how herders access market chains in remote areas, how weather-related risks affect market access, and which producer groups (including women) benefit from different markets.
