Soros Foundation – Open Society Fellowship
The Open Society Fellowship supports individuals seeking innovative and unconventional approaches to fundamental open society challenges. The fellowship funds work that will enrich public understanding of those challenges and stimulate far-reaching and probing conversations within the Open Society Foundations and in the world. A fellowship project might identify a problem that has not previously been recognized, develop new policy ideas to address familiar problems, or offer a new advocacy strategy. Fellows should take advantage of the considerable intellectual and logistical resources of the Open Society Foundations and expect to contribute meaningfully to the Foundations’ thinking in return. In evaluating each proposal, the selection committee weighs three factors: the applicant, the topic of the project, and the work product. Deadline: Feb. 1, 2012
Department of State – Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship
The Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, provides opportunities for U.S. citizens to build mutual understanding and contribute to the strengthening of the public sector abroad. Fulbright Public Policy Fellows will serve in professional placements in foreign government ministries or institutions and gain hands-on public sector experience in participating foreign countries while simultaneously carrying out an academic research/study project. Population Action International (PAI) — Climate Advocacy Small Grants 2012
PAI’s grants for Climate Advocacy focus on linkages between population, reproductive health, gender, and climate change adaptation. Applications are invited from organizations based in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nepal, Philippines, and Tanzania. Grants are up to US$20 thousand for projects of one year. Application Deadline is February 06, 2012
French Committee for International Solidarity — Family Agriculture in West Africa
The French Committee for International Solidarity (Comité Français pour la Solidarité Internationale – CFSI), in partnership with Fondation de France, funds projects that support small-scale farming in West Africa. Proposals are invited from organizations and partnerships in West Africa and Europe such as farming organizations; NGOs; public institutions; and networks of organizations and individuals working together. For one-year projects, grants range from €10 thousand to €15 thousand. For projects of up to three years, the maximum funding is €50 thousand per project. Applications can be submitted in French or English.The application deadline is March 29, 2012
ANSTI administers the L’Oréal-UNESCO Regional Fellowships “For Women in Science” in Sub-Sahara Africa. Fellowships will be awarded for PhD research by women up to age 40 in any country of Sub-Saharan Africa. All fields of science, engineering, and technology are eligible. The awards are up to US$20 thousand.Applications should be submitted by March 30, 2012

Newton International Fellowships (to work in UK Research Labs)
The Newton International Fellowships Scheme is delivered by The British Academy and the Royal Society. The Scheme has been established to select the very best early stage post-doctoral researchers from all over the world and enable them to work at UK research institutions for a period of two years. The Scheme covers researchers in all disciplines covered by the two academies – physical, natural and social sciences, and the humanities.

CODESRIA supports researchers in African universities and research centers through funding for Comparative Research Networks. The networks address priority research themes within CODESRIA’s strategic plan, including (among others): (i) Water and Water Resources in the Political Economy of Development and Citizenship; (ii) Ecology, Climate, and Environmental Sustainability in Africa; (iii) the Changing Political Economy of African Natural Resources; and (iv) Agrarian Transformation. Most grants range from US$10 thousand to US$30 thousand. The application deadline is June 15, 2012
Ford Foundation – International Fellowships
The Ford Foundation announces the International Fellowships Program (IFP) which provides opportunities for advanced study to exceptional individuals who will use this education to become leaders in their respective fields, furthering development in their own countries and greater economic and social justice worldwide. The program provides support for up to three years of formal graduate-level study in any academic discipline or field that is consistent with Ford Foundation interests. The Foundation currently works in 15 fields to strengthen democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement.
